In Canada, international students are allowed to work on and off-campus while studying, as long as they have a valid study permit with authorization to work.

In Part 1, we looked at the basics of working in Canada for non-residents, and who can work.

In Part 2, we looked at who cannot work.

In this Part 3, we will look at how many hours an international student can work.

How Many Hours Can a Student Work

During regular school terms/semesters you can work up to 20 hours per week. You can have more than one job, but you should keep the total numbers within the allowed limit.

From Nov. 15, 2022, till end of 2023, you will be able to work more than 20 hours if you meet the following requirements:

  • If you applied for a study permit (or extension) on or before October 7, 2022.
  • If you applied for a study permit extension after October 7, 2022
  • During scheduled breaks in the academic year
  • You can work full-time if you’re on a scheduled break, such as winter and summer holidays, or a fall or spring reading week. You can work overtime or work two jobs that that add up to a higher than usual number of hours.
  • You must be a full-time student both before and after the break to work full-time.
  • You can’t work during a break that comes before you start your very first school semester.

NOTE: it is your responsibility to keep track of your hours.
